That ain't right. When I bought my 97, the mirrors shook loose in the first few days because they weren't put on very tight at the factory. I just tightened them back up and they've been fine since.
I'm going to go out on a limb here: you said your arms hurt, and so that makes me suspect that this is a first bike and you are gripping the bars too tight. This is a very common problem among new riders: they are still uneasy with riding a motorcycle, and tend to hang onto the bars with a "death grip". This causes the muscles to tense up. If this is the case (and maybe I'm wrong?) you need to relax and grasp more loosely onto the grips.
If you really are experiencing a problem, take it back to the shop and have the mechanic take it for a short test ride. If he is a half-decent mechanic he should be able to tell you right away whether the vibration level is normal.
